How to take an Eye Exam

If you are like many of our patients who find the stress of deciding ‘which one is better number 1 or number 2’ uncomfortable, here are some simple suggestions to make your visit more enjoyable.

First remember your eye doctor is trained to interpret your answers. Many people behave as though their entire future hinges upon a correct answer. This is why many people either won’t say anything or ask to see the same comparisons over and over before giving that ‘final answer.’

You should go with your very first impression as to which choice is better. If there was hardly any difference, just say they were the same or equal. If there is enough difference to truly matter, you will notice it.

When your doctor has narrowed the power down to a couple of choices, they will be repeated to give you an opportunity to make a final decision. Following these simple suggestions will allow you to be much more comfortable.

At Gateway Vision we understand that every one of our patients wishes to receive corrective eyewear that will truly enable them to see their very best. Our office does a considerable amount of laser vision correction. The laser is programmed to our prescription. Even though you may not be considering laser vision correction, we examine each pair of eyes with the detail you would expect if you were.
So relax and enjoy your exam.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

You'll know you're in good hands as soon as you walk through the door. Our competent and professional staff will ask you to provide a detailed health history, including the reason for the visit. The health of your eyes will be fully documented through the use of:

an auto-refractor, which helps us to determine an accurate eyeglass prescription,
retinal photographs, which reveal the health of the inside of the eye, and a
glaucoma test, which measures the pressure of the eye.

Your vision will be tested and a computer-generated prescription prepared. Dr. Friedman will examine the structures of the eye for cataracts or other conditions, and when all tests are done will spend as much time with you as needed to explain his findings and recommendations.
